Check Your Tire Pressure

Tire
Here are two good reasons to get down there with the gauge and make sure your tires are inflated to the car-maker's pressures.

1) Tires lose a pound of pressure for every drop of 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

2) An underinflated tire won't "bite" through snow down to the pavement as well as one at pressure. It's similar to hydroplaning on water -- and just as dangerous. You may have heard the guidance to let air out of your tires for sand or snow to get more surface area. That only applies only if the surface is bottomlessly soft, like a beach or foot-deep, unplowed snow -- not the mix of cleared road, ice and packed snow most of us encounter in daily driving.

Don't forget to put the valve caps back on (or, buy new ones) when you're done. Letting in moisture, which then freezes, could let the valve core leak out air.

Respect for the Planet: Toyota's 2012 Report Details Commitment to the Environment

111
Toyota highlighted its sustainable manufacturing advancements and commitment to environmental leadership as the automaker released its 2012 North America Environmental Report. The report spans Toyota operations in the United States, Canada and Mexico over the fiscal year, including research and development, manufacturing, logistics and sales. Toyota remains the most fuel-efficient full line auto manufacturer in the United States and the industry hybrid leader.

Achievements featured in the 2012 report include:

  • New eco-conscious vehicles: two within the Prius family – the Prius c and Prius Plug-in Hybrid – and the highly anticipated, all-electric 2013 RAV4 EV co-developed with Tesla
  • Exceeding requirements under the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for U.S. cars and Canadian Car Company Average Fuel Consumption (CAFC) standards
  • Ten Toyota North American plants achieved zero waste to landfill
  • Seven percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per vehicle produced (since 2008)
  • More than 600 suppliers and 41 Toyota sites have been internationally-certified environmental management systems
  • A 15 percent reduction in energy consumption per vehicle produced (since 2002)
  • Vibrant local partnerships, including nearly 900 volunteer events with TogetherGreenTM, Toyota signature environmental philanthropic program with the National Audubon Society
“Toyota believes sustainable operations go hand-in-hand with our core values of quality, innovation and good corporate citizenship,” said Dian Ogilvie, senior vice president and secretary, Toyota Motor North America, Inc.  “We are committed to continuous improvement and finding creative ways to address the challenges of climate change and resource scarcity with dedicated leadership and the help of our partners.”

The report also measured Toyota North American operations against one-year goals in compliance, air emissions, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, waste minimization and water use. Key partnerships, industry trends and insight on consumer preferences also guide Toyota’s efforts in serving both the planet and its people.

  Other highlights include:

  Innovative Technology and Fuel-Efficiency

  • The Prius Family continues to lead the U.S. hybrid market, capturing 52 percent of the U.S. purchases in the first half of 2012 and with the new Prius Plug-in Hybrid estimated to go as many as 540 miles on a single charge and single tank. More than 1.2 million Prius Family vehicles have been sold in the U.S. and 2.9 million worldwide as of June 30, 2012.
  • Toyota continues to innovate using bio-based plastics in parts and components and is investigating new eco-friendly fabrics and carpets. In each model redesign or running change, more renewable, recycled and recyclable materials are considered.

“We are thrilled that KBB.com has selected Toyota for its Best Resale Value Brand award, and we appreciate Kelley Blue Book’s efforts to help increase consumer awareness as to the importance of resale value when purchasing a car“, said Bill Fay, Group Vice President and General Manager of Toyota division.

2013 KELLY BLUE BOOK BEST RESALE VALUE BY VEHICLE CATEGORY:

FULL-SIZE CAR: Toyota Avalon
MID-SIZE SUV/CROSSOVER:
FULL-SIZE SUV/CROSSOVER:
Toyota FJ Cruiser
Toyota Sequoia
MID-SIZE PICKUP TRUCK:
FULL-SIZE PICKUP TRUCK:

TMC Opens Intelligent Transport System Test Site in Japan

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) began full-scale operations at its ITS Proving Ground, a new test site — within the grounds of the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture — established with the aim of reducing traffic accidents through Intelligent Transport System (ITS) technology.

The new 3.5-hectare ITS Proving Ground simulates an urban environment with faithfully replicated roads and traffic signals. The site is equipped with a road-to-vehicle communications system consisting of a vehicle detection system, a pedestrian detection system, a course monitoring system, traffic signals and control devices.

The communications system runs on the 700 MHz band, which was allocated for ITS by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in December 2011. The 700 MHz band is easily diffracted and reception over wide areas is possible, making it effective for communications with vehicles at intersections and other locations with poor visibility.

With the start of full-scale operations at the ITS Proving Ground, TMC will accelerate its research and development of environmental systems designed to improve fuel efficiency as well as safe driving support systems that seek to prevent accidents involving pedestrians and other vehicles in urban areas and at intersections.

TMC is also conducting research and development on next-generation vehicle-infrastructure cooperative systems that support safe driving and that have been designed to prevent accidents involving pedestrians and other vehicles at intersections with poor visibility through the continuous exchange of road-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian-to-vehicle information.

At the special-purpose ITS Proving Ground, TMC will work toward the early practical adoption of evermore reliable systems by repeatedly conducting testing and evaluations that can be difficult to perform on public roads with changing road environments.

TMC considers the elimination of traffic fatalities and injuries the ultimate goal of a society that values mobility, and is therefore conducting research and development on individual onboard safety devices and systems based on its Integrated Safety Management Concept, an approach that gives direction to safety technology and vehicle development. TMC is pressing forward with the development of safer
vehicles and technologies and is intensifying its wide-ranging traffic-safety initiatives by participating in the development of safer traffic environments and promoting traffic safety education.

Toyota Launches High School Safe Teen Driving Program at Southern California High Schools

Toyota is expanding its long-term commitment to safe teen driving with the introduction of an innovative national driver safety program, The Road Ahead, in high schools throughout Southern California. The program will benefit more than 6,000 local students in an effort to save lives and promote road safety. The Road Ahead is an expansion of Toyota’s free, safe teen driving program, Toyota Driving Expectations, which began in 2004 and has benefited more than 20,000 teens and parents.

Featuring Erica Enders, a nationally recognized race car driver and subject of the original Disney movie “Right on Track,” The Road Ahead kicks off its Southern California debut at selected high schools in the South Bay, Los Angeles and Orange County communities. Designed to educate and empower teens about road safety, the program engages students with high-impact video, live presentations and a distracted driving demonstration to teach them how to prepare, concentrate and observe the road ahead. During the simulated distracted driving experience, students will observe and understand the dangers associated with distractions behind the wheel. All programs are free and will take place during school hours.

"By bringing The Road Ahead to Southern California high schools, students will gain critical knowledge to help them become responsible drivers,” said Michael Rouse, Toyota’s vice president of diversity, philanthropy and community affairs. “With motor vehicle crashes remaining the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, it’s important for Toyota to expand upon Toyota Driving Expectations in order to impact even more young drivers.”

Enders is the first woman in history to qualify No.1 in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Pro Stock Field and set a Guinness World Record. Sharing the inspiring story of realizing her dream, she also understands first-hand the importance of safe driving as she reaches speeds of more than 200 miles per hour when racing on the closed NHRA Pro Stock.

“Promoting safe driving early on is essential to help develop responsible habits behind the wheel as an adult,” Enders said. “I’m excited to support this program and help students understand the importance of road safety.”

In addition to The Road Ahead program in high schools, Toyota will once again offer Southern California teens and parents the free, behind-the-wheel defensive driving program, On the Road, in spring 2013. The 2.5-hour course supplements standard driving education courses with real-time opportunities to learn about defensive driving, the impact of distractions and safe habits. The program involves both driving time and classroom discussions, and is unique for requiring the participation of a parent or guardian to support coaching within the family.

In spring 2013, Toyota will offer free safety clinics at select Toyota dealerships covering vehicle dynamics and safety features, defensive driving, distracted driving and the importance of vehicle maintenance. The program offers parents and teens an opportunity to learn safe driving tips from professional instructors in a non-sales environment inside their local Toyota dealerships. Created in partnership with Discovery Education, the program also includes the Toyota Teen Driver Video Challenge and Educator Challenge, which offers teachers and students the opportunity to win prizes and scholarships by showing a commitment to safety.

Maintenance Tip Monday- Drive with care everyday

Drive with care everyday

Being car considerate shouldn’t stop after the break-in. Drive with care every day and your car will reward you with longer intervals without repair.

  • Do not race your car’s engine during start-up.This is a quick way to add years of wear to your engine, especially if it’s cold outside.
  • Accelerate slowly when you begin your drive. The most wear to the engine and drive train occurs in the first ten to twenty minutes of operation.
  • Warming the engine by letting it idle in the driveway is not a smart idea. The engine doesn’t operate at its peak temperature, resulting in incomplete fuel combustion, soot deposits on cylinder walls, oil contamination, and ultimately damaged components.
  • Put less strain on your engine and automatic transmission by shifting to neutral at red lights. Otherwise, the engine is still working to push the car even while it’s stopped.
  • Avoid driving at high speeds and accelerating quickly, especially when it’s very hot or very cold outside. Such driving behavior will result in more frequent repairs.
  • Extend the life of your tires with careful driving. Observe posted speed limits. Avoid fast starts, stops, and turns. Avoid potholes and objects on the road. Don’t run over curbs or hit the tire against the curb when parking. And, of course, don’t burn rubber.
  • When turning your steering wheel, don’t hold it in an extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds. Doing so can damage the power-steering pump.
  • Consolidate your short driving trips. Most of the wear and tear — as well as the pollution your car generates — takes place in the first few minutes of driving. Doing several errands at once, during low traffic hours if possible, will keep your engine happier longer.

Toyota and Discovery Education Challenge Teachers and Students to Help Teens Stay Safe Behind the Wheel

Toyotaarticle
Toyota and Discovery Education today announced that the Toyota Teen Driver Video Challenge and Toyota Teen Driver Educators’ Challenge are now open for entries. These challenges invite teens and their teachers to share their most creative ideas to help promote teen safe driving habits.  Entries for both programs are due by Feb. 14, 2013.

Motor vehicle crashes remain the number one cause of death for teens.  In fact, current research shows that 35% of all teen deaths are a result of car crashes -- more than cancer, suicide, heart disease and homicide combined. To address this challenge, Toyota and Discovery Education teamed up in 2010 to create Toyota Teen Driver, a comprehensive program and online destination providing safe-driving tools and resources to educators, students and parents.

Safe Driving Programs for Both Teens and Teachers

The Toyota Teen Driver Video Challenge encourages students to create and develop an original video describing what they can do in their communities to help make their peers and themselves safer drivers. The top ten videos will be chosen by a panel of experts for their originality and compelling content, followed by a public voting period on ToyotaTeenDriver.com to select the winner. The first, second and third place winners will receive $15,000, $10,000 and $7,500 cash prizes, respectively. In addition, Discovery Channel film crews will visit the top three students’ hometowns to hear their stories and capture their visions for safer driving for pieces that will air on ToyotaTeenDriver.com and additional Discovery online properties. The seven runners-up will each receive $1,000.  The Video Challenge is open to students in grades 9-12.

Recognizing that educators also play a key role in ensuring teens stay safe on the road, Toyota and Discovery Education have also opened applications for the 2013 Toyota Teen Driver Educators’ Challenge.  For this Challenge, educators are asked to create innovative action plans for keeping students safe on the roads. The grand prize winner will receive a 4 day trip for two to Washington, D.C., to attend a safe-driving conference and a $10,000 cash prize. In addition, that teacher’s school will be awarded a Virtual Driver Interactive simulator and a safe-driving assembly, led by Toyota Teen Driver experts.  The second place winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize and a driving simulator and safe-driving assembly for their school.

“At Toyota, we are deeply committed to the notion that everyone deserves to be safe,” said Patricia Salas Pineda, Toyota’s group vice president of National Philanthropy and the Toyota USA Foundation.  “We are glad to be working with Discovery Education to bring critical safety information to schools and students across the country.  This is an important commitment for Toyota and a vital part of our efforts to help ensure that drivers and passengers are safe at every phase of life.”

In addition to Toyota Teen Driver, Toyota’s work to help keep teens safe on the road includes: Toyota Driving Expectations, a free program for teens and their parents which provides hands-on, real world defensive driving experiences; groundbreaking safety research partnerships with major North American research universities through the company’s $50 million Collaborative Safety Research Center; and national teen safe driving partnerships with DoSomething.org and the National Safety Council.  Toyota also has a national program in place to help ensure safety for child passengers (Buckle Up for Life) as well as a major partnership with AARP to address driver safety for seniors.

“Discovery Education is thrilled to continue our partnership with Toyota to provide teachers, students and their families with creative and engaging resources to keep teens safe behind the wheel,” said Mary Rollins, Discovery Education vice president. “The Educators’ Challenge and Video Challenge, as well as the resources available on ToyotaTeenDriver.com, provide a unique opportunity for teachers and students to connect on and explore issues that transcend into their everyday lives.”

What to Do if Your Check Engine Light Comes On

Check-engine

You’re driving home from work when suddenly you see a light in the shape of an engine illuminate your dashboard. You pull off the road to check it out: sure enough, it’s the “check engine” light (CEL).  Now it’s time to panic (just kidding). Stay calm, and consider the most common source of this warning: the gas cap. Is it tightened? Check/tighten it, then drive for 15-20 minutes to give the warning light time to turn itself off.

Pay attention to other signals from the CEL and the car’s corresponding performance:

Minor issue

  • Warning: the light’s on (even intermittently) or flickering
  • Performance: no noticeable performance issues
  • Solution: Keep driving, but get the car checked out as soon as possible.

Major issue

  • Warning: the light stays on
  • Performance: There are noticeable performance issues
  • Solution: Get off the road as soon as you can; tow the car to a professional for service

Vital issue

  • Warning: the light blinks steadily (not flickers)
  • Performance: accelerating leads to flashing light (i.e., total emission control failure)
  • Solution: Immediately get off the road; tow the car to a professional for service

If you’re confident there’s no engine/emission problem or you’ve fixed it (or are about to fix it), then it’s time to turn off the engine light. Can you do this yourself? Maybe. Depends on the age of your car.

For pre-1996 cars

If your car was built before the mid-90s, all you need to do is open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal for about 30 seconds. When you restart the car, the light should be off again.

For post-1995 cars

The engine lights in these vehicles use different technology, and they’re not so easy to reset. You’ll need to go to a repair shop to have a mechanic turn it off with a special scanner. Alternatively, you can go to auto parts stores to use their scanners and get the diagnostic codes for your vehicle’s engine problems—national chains often provide this service for free.

Terminology lesson

check-engine light/malfunction-indicator light: “CEL”/“MIL”

diagnostic trouble code: “DTC”

Teams Hustle to Complete their Builds on Time for the Toyota Racing Dream Build Challenge

Toyota
Customizing a vehicle can often be broken down into a series of tasks that can then be scheduled and executed—at least until the clock runs out. Then all bets are off. And so it goes for the Toyota Racing Dream Build Challenge teams with time to complete their ambitious builds coming to a close in about two weeks, just before voting begins on October 20. And just like a race car, these one-off rides must be ready to go when the green flag drops.

Kyle Busch's "Rowdy Edition" Camry is "getting close." Busch's team at Detroit Speed has extensively reworked the Camry's body with strong fender flares, a NASCAR-style splitter and front and rear belly pans to direct airflow under the car. All of these parts have been custom designed and fabricated by hand—a painstaking and time-consuming process. More recently, the team has been scrambling to finish custom interior touches with completely redone seats and a custom electronic entertainment package.

Getting a complex collection of custom-built electronics to work seamlessly in his "Tekked-Out Prius" seems to be keeping Clint Bowyer's RKM Performance Center team awake into the wee hours. It's loaded with hi-tech gadgets like side-view cameras that replace the mirrors, 45 feet. of fiber optic interior lighting and a 16-speaker stereo with six crossovers and dual amplifiers. Then there's the suspension which has dropped the Prius "lower than a Sprint Cup car." And, there’s certainly no lack of team spirit as their build will sport no less than 364 copies of the Toyota logo.
Alexis DeJoria's Pre-Runner Tundra concept has her Racer Engineering team working on virtually every aspect of the truck. Long-travel suspension (20 inches in the rear), an elaborate custom roll cage wrapped in leather, and a TRD-supercharged engine are all part of her design to make a serious off-road tool. The team is also squeezing in a JBL audio system and a specially-built fuel cell. It’s all more than enough to keep them busy right up to the due date.

Some builds are more ambitious than others, and Antron Brown's “DragQuoia” is a big concept that's challenging its capable builders. The "family dragster" idea means that whatever they do has to leave room for the family to ride safely and comfortably. And they're doing quite a lot. For starters, the Motorsports Technical Center team is lopping more than 2,000 lbs. off the factory curb weight. A TRD blower and nitrous coax the 5.7-liter V8 to pump out more than 650 hp for those "quick" runs to the supermarket. Massive 21.5-inch wide rear tires put the power to the ground, which in turn need big fender mods—inside and out—to keep the hot rubber bits contained in the wheel wells. Fortunately, Junior will have a comfortable perch in the back to view the scenery rushing by, secured with his own five-point racing harness. And between runs, he can watch his favorite DVD on the seat-back media player.

Every one of the Dream Build vehicle teams has the chops and experience to deliver for their driver. The simple question on delivery day may come down to this: Which team will be the least sleep deprived.

All four of the Toyota Racing Dream Build Challenge vehicles will be unveiled at the Toyota display during the company's press conference on October 30 at the 2012 SEMA Show. Fans can vote for their favorite team beginning on October 20 and may vote once per day through October 29.

Charitable Endeavors Stand to Benefit from Toyota Racing Dream Build Challenge

08-30-12-01

Winning the Toyota Racing Dream Build Challenge — a vehicle-modification build competition pitting four legendary racers and their dream cars against each other — will earn the champion more than bragging rights. Toyota will award a check for $50,000 to the winner’s designated charity. In addition, second, third and fourth place will receive $25k, $15k and $10k, respectively.

The four contenders, who are racing against the clock to complete their vehicle in just a few short weeks, are: NASCAR Chase for the Championship contender Clint Bowyer, who is building an ultra-high-tech Prius in hopes of benefitting the Emporia Community Foundation; NHRA Top Fuel points leader Antron Brown and his drag-race-inspired Sequoia, whose victory could assist Racers for Christ; NASCAR superstar Kyle Busch, who hopes his stylish road-race Camry will secure a donation to the Kyle Busch Foundation; and NHRA Nitro Funny Car phenom Alexis DeJoria, who is transforming a Tundra into an all-out desert racer on behalf of Safety Harbor Kids.

Fans will determine by online voting which of the four modified Toyota vehicles will win the challenge—along with $50,000 to the winning driver’s charity of choice. Here are their choices:

The mission of the Emporia Community Foundation is to improve the quality of life in Emporia, Kan.,Clint Bowyer’s home town, and the surrounding communities. ECF is a collection of funds and resources donated by caring citizens, including Bowyer himself, who have chosen to make their community a better place to live and work, now and in the future.

The foundation has contributed to projects and services focused on education, children, elder care, recreation and social care.

Racers for Christ— part of the Christian Motorsports
International, Inc., family of ministries and often called “Team RFC” — was established in 1971 as a fellowship for Christians in the sport of motor racing. Its members conduct non-denominational chapel services at more than 2,000 local and professional racing events nationwide every year. Recognizing that, for many people involved in motorsports, consistent participation in a local church body is difficult, Team RFC provides the same kind of pastoral support motorsports enthusiasts and professionals (like Antron Brown) would receive from a home church, including communion, weddings, baptisms, hospital visits, memorial services and more.

The mission of Kyle Busch’s eponymous Kyle Busch Foundation is to empower young men and women by fostering life experiences and helping them achieve their goals. Through special events, the foundation supports programs focused on teens and young adults, the terminally ill, safe driving and recreation. Charities that KBF supports include B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible and Keep Everyone Safe), Young Life, Speedway Children’s Charities, Make a Wish, the NASCAR Foundation, Wave Warriors Surf Camp and more.

Safety Harbor Kids, the chosen charity of Alexis DeJoria, was formed in 2007 for the purpose of enriching the lives of orphans, foster children and homeless children through education. It currently serves more than 2,000 needy children in over 15 group homes and shelters in and around Los Angeles. Its goal is to build a College, Career and the Arts Education Center where at-risk children can acquire the resources they need to get ahead in life. At each special event held by Safety Harbor Kids, mentors assist children with personal growth, motivation, career development, music and art — and in so doing create a safety net to catch the children as they grow up and leave institutional life.

The $50,000 check that will go to one of these four worthwhile causes is representative of Toyota’s own commitment to charitable endeavors. Since 1991, Toyota has contributed about half a billion dollars to philanthropic programs in the U.S. alone.

The company emphasizes environmental stewardship, education, safety and the needs of local communities.

In 2008, Toyota launched TogetherGreen, a $20 million, five-year alliance with Audubon to fund conservation efforts, train environmental leaders and offer volunteer opportunities to benefit the environment.

The Toyota U.S.A. Foundation’s $100 million endowment supports K-12 efforts in math, science and environmental studies.

Toyota Driving Expectations (TDE) is a free program for teen drivers and their parents whose goal is to proactively take America’s driving youth through a safe driving experience.

In addition, Toyota supports initiatives in other areas of need, such as food, housing and the arts, in a variety of diverse communities.

Voting for the winner of the Toyota Racing Dream Build Challenge will open on Oct. 20 and will continue through Oct. 29. Fans will be able to vote once per day on Facebook. The final vehicle builds will be unveiled—and the winning driver and charity announced — during Toyota’s press conference at the SEMA show in Las Vegas on Oct. 30. Clearly, there will be more than one deserving winner—which is exactly what Toyota wants.

Check out what our customers are saying about us!

"Hello everyone. My name is Larry Martin. I had my 10,000 mile free maintenance done at Valley-Hi Toyota on 8/10/12. I'm a pilot and know first hand the importance of maintenance-car or aircraft. I must tell you that the level of service I received at Valley-Hi far exceeded my demanding expectations. I'm a "tough" customer and it's not easy to earn my trust. From the guy who wrote up my work order (David Carpenter) to the shop's boss (Joe Marquez), I left feeling confident that my car was given the "red carpet" treatment!" -Tough Customer

Which items do you feel are the most important to keep in your car in case of emergencies?

It's something all drivers dread and hopefully will never have to experience - breaking down on the side of the road! In case of a once-in-a-lifetime situation like this, we should all keep some handy items in our vehicles.

Which items do you feel are the most important to keep in your car in case of emergencies? Jumper cables? Flash light? Let us know!

Thank you to those who participated in our most recent "New Owner Appreciation Dinner"

Wow, what an event! Valley Hi Toyota Scion has been holding “New Owner Celebration Events” for years now. When I came on board this event was considerably smaller but rewarding for our customers. Today this event has grown in attendance from thirty five to over 120 consistently.

Our most recent event has excelled the past 31 events with an impressive 155 in attendance not counting the staff needed to facilitate such an event. It has always been our pleasure as a company and a dealership to express our sincerest appreciate to our customers and their guest.

As your preferred dealership we realize you could have chosen any dealership to purchase and service your vehicles. But we are delighted that you have continued to make us your dealership of choice.  In fact if this was an Olympic event for us our Toyota customers would have given us the gold medal amongst our dealer group and our Toyota competitors.  For that we would like to extend to you a “BIG THANK-YOU” We enjoyed each and every person who attended our July event. We sincerely hope all of you enjoyed your prizes and special gifts. We truly look forward to building the business relationship with you, your family and friends over the course of your ownership with your newly purchased vehicle. Comments or suggestion for the next event can be directed by any of the means listed below. All suggestions will be kept in the confidence of the dealership and used as at the dealerships discretion.

Respectfully,

Evelyn Brown - Customer Relations Director
